British actress and activist Virginia McKenna talks about Born Free, a film based on Jay Adamson’s novel by the same name. Born Free celebrates its 50th anniversary this year.

McKenna and her husband Bill Travers acted in the film about bringing up a little orphaned lion cub called Elsa. The picture’s title song Born Free sung by Matt Munro won an Academy Award (1966) for the Best Original Song. Ironically, the song was not included at first and McKenna explains the back story of how it got included later on.

McKenna was in San Francisco as part of this year’s San Francisco Green Film Festival.

And we have a longer interview with McKenna coming up where she talks about the making of the film and how they learnt to work with lions.
